I hope everyone had a great summer! Today I am joining 17 other bloggers for a fall tablescape blog hop hosted by our fabulous hostess with the mostess, Rita, from Panoply – thank you Rita! It was an eventful summer here in Calgary. Two of my boys were married and I welcomed two DILs to our family. And all three of the boys and DILs sold their current homes and bought new ones. The housing market is very hot here and its not unusual for new listings to be sold within hours with multiple offers and usually at over-asking price. It’s a seller’s dream. Buying a house, on the other hand, is definitely not for the faint-hearted. We have also been helping mom pack up these last few weeks as she is moving later this week as well. And, to add to all the activity, hubs and I decided to redo our kitchen countertops which inadvertently left us without running water in the kitchen sink for nearly four days. In any event, we have been busy here and if I’ve missed commenting on some posts as a result, please forgive.
But to the table. I originally had planned a completely different table for fall. But then I was in HomeSense not that long ago and happened across these beautiful fall hydrangeas and dahlias. I just loved their colors with the rusty shades of orange and muted greens, purples, browns, and golden yellows.
I knew that I had some “orangey” plates at home that I hoped would go with the flowers.
Here are the beaded dinner and salad plates that I layered on white-washed, leaf-rimmed charger plates. I wasn’t sure what to call the color of the plates, but they reminded me of spices.
Looking at my spices – at least those with a fall vibe – cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and cayenne pepper all looked too brown. But both paprika and smoked paprika were candidates. What do you think – is the smoked paprika a better match or is the paprika?
I initially had just the plaid napkins on the plates but it was a bit too much orange and it didn’t do much for the napkin rings. Layering an ivory napkin on top allowed some plaid pattern to peek through and better showcased the napkin ring. I used my bronze twig flatware.
The stemware was my gold-rimmed metallic leaf wine glasses. I left the water glasses off for a less crowded look.
For the centerpiece, I simply arranged the hydrangea and dahlia flower heads around two small white-washed candle holders with orange pillar candles on an ivory velvet table runner.
If the lighting seems different in some photos it’s probably because there was smoke from the forest fires in the air.
The days are growing shorter and the leaves on the maple tree are starting to turn color. It’s approaching the time of year when I really appreciate the warmth of candles, although candles are good anytime.

Wow, Kim, what a spicy theme for fall. Love your choice of colors. They are perfect for this season. We were in Calegary back in July and the cooler temperatures were so nice compared to our Texas heat. Such a nice city. Your combination of colors I’m the dishes and flowers add the right palette for fall.

Your table with the spicy colors is beautiful. The paprika-colored plates are a lovely shade. And the centerpiece looks like they were meant to go together.

Kim, this is a classic and classy nod to the coming season of fall. I think either paprika would be the color match, depending on the light. I love the layered napkins and, like you, I feel like the twig flatware is just right for the season. I love dried hydrangeas and your faux florals are how they’re best cut to make a similar look. Unfortunately for me, I had immature plants that did not produce enough blooms to feel like I could take from them. As for the smoke, I can’t tell by the photos, but I certainly feel for you and your breathing air quality. So not only has it been a strange weather summer, but wow! All the activity within your family sure makes for whirlwind dynamics! Here’s hoping September brings some rest and relaxation to savor the season. Thanks for your lovely comments Rita and for stopping by – I know that you have been really busy too! I’m sorry that your hydrangeas didn’t produce at that well this year. Yes, all the activity here; it was really mom’s move that was a tad stressful. She’s had her name on a wait list for awhile and these places tend to come up quickly with not a lot of notice. The good news is that she’s now moved in, her old place is for sale and should sell quickly, and getting the new place to her liking will hopefully be at a much more leisurely pace. Fingers crossed. Kim, what a gorgeous selection of colors. I love the “spice” color. It says Fall without it being a bright orange. It is soft and luxurious, especially paired with your gold leaf stemware. I love your choice of napkin rings which does catch your attention against the white napkin and plaid napkin as the “trim”. It definitely works together beautifully. The purchase of the hydrangeas make a great inspiration piece. I would have snatched them up in a hurry myself. Your Fall tablescape really pops with your use of leaf-shaped white chargers, especially placed on your dark wood dining table. It definitely gives a special “wow” to your Fall tablescape. Hi Marsha! Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving such lovely comments. Yes, the faux flowers were definitely the inspiration for the table. I was very careful when removing the heads so I could reattach them to the stems when I was finished. I’m sure I’ll be able to use them on another table – you might not know it from the pictures, but they look really nice with a yellow-gold too. I loved your mushroom inspired table as well – the mushroom and beef goulash definitely spoke fall to me and those mini skillet pans were adorable. Hi Kari! Thanks for your comments – I leaned towards the smoked paprika as well in terms of color but the paprika worked too. They were pretty close. Yes, all the moves here have made everyone quite busy but we will be particularly happy when we can get my mom moved in and settled. We will have to clear out her old place and get it ready to sell but that’s manageable, I think. I’m so glad that you liked the table and yours was very innovative too with your green and golden/yellow theme and all that gorgeous vintage glassware. Its so great to see everyone’s ideas. The white leaf plate chargers look fabulous against the paprika looking plates. I think adding the white napkin along with the plaid compliments the look, especially with the colorful napkin rings. Wow Kim, You have indeed had a busy summer! Not just one wedding but two and then the moves. It seems there are always surprises with any renovation, even small ones. The silver lining of no running water in the kitchen means no cooking and your meals out right? 😊 Love the soft muted colors of your hydrangeas and dahlias for your fall table inspiration and the beaded design on your plates. I can see them in a spooky fun table for Halloween too. I love the warmth your copper twig flatware brings to the table and soft luster of your metallic leaf wine glasses. Hi Mary! Fortunately, neither of the sons and DILS wanted a formal wedding so that was a big help. As for the countertops, we have a small 1/2 bath off the kitchen and I don’t think its ever seen quite as much use as it did on those four days. But all is back to normal kitchen-wise. We have been lucky this summer with the smoke – its just been here and there and not everyday like it has been in some places. I’m glad you like the table and I actually hadn’t even considered the plates for Halloween so thanks for the tip. Kim, the wonderful color combination you chose is warm and inviting. The soft shade of the ‘spice’ plates perfectly complement the darker amber of the flowers and the beige/orange of the napkins. Kim, I had no idea you had so much going on! You have been busy with the weddings of two sons, new homes for all three sons, your mom moving, and kitchen remodeling for you. Whew, that is quite a bit. But it sounds like all were happy events. I love the spicey colors, indeed paprika. The velvet runner is the perfect foundation for the fall centerpiece of dahlias and hydrangeas. I do love the paprika plates, napkins, and napkin rings. Hi Barbara! I’m so glad you liked the table and the candles. We are still kinda hot here but I’m sure it won’t last too much longer. The family is relatively close by with all the moves. Middle and youngest sons opted for new builds so they will be a bit further away than before, but mom is now right across the street from the hospital where I work. Oldest son found a house in the same community that they were already in. It has been a busy summer and way more so for the boys than for me. Wow Kim – you have been a busy gal! Two weddings!! How wonderful!! Sorry to hear about your counter top situation…nothing ever seems to go as planned, eh? And how about that smoke? Scary to think about…we’ve had a couple of forest fires here on the East Coast. My brother in law, wife, son and his wife were all displaced for 11 days….thankfully they did not lose their homes & are back safe and sound.

Thanks so much for stopping by and your lovely comments Charlotte! We’ve been lucky with the smoke this year, relatively speaking, compared to the previous two summers. There was quite a bit in May, and then just kind of off and on since then. There was just a couple of days when I was trying to photograph the table as luck would have it. I’m sorry to hear about your brother-in-law and his family, but I’m so glad that they are back safe and sound and didn’t lose their home. There’s fires everywhere this year it seems. I’m really glad that you liked the table and have an awesome week yourself my friend!
