Home and garden, tablescaping, organization, DIY

Good morning!

I hope everyone is doing well out there and that spring is on the horizon for many of you.  Here in Calgary, we have probably another 5 to 6 weeks of winter to look forward to by the time I post this.  But there is nothing like a good dump of snow and a cold snap in February to make me long for spring.

Today I am sharing a spring tablescape in the hopes of dispelling that image above, if only for a while.  The table started with some lavender plates from HomeSense that I first noticed in early January.  I managed to resist them until a few weeks ago when they began bringing in the Easter items that included a lovely lilac/lavender/periwinkle, uh, light purple table cloth and napkins with pretty white lace edging.  As soon as I saw the linens, I knew exactly what would go with them lol.  Plus, I knew I already had these lavender napkin rings that had been patiently waiting for a chance to come out and play.

And any lingering doubts that I may have had about the plates dissolved once I popped into the Dollar Tree; there they had their spring flower offerings of lavender and amaranthus picks in an assortment of purple and white shades.  Once at home I wondered if I could actually create a centerpiece of Dollar Tree flowers, or in this case, sprigs of lavender.  Hmmm.

On went the table cloth.  Nope, no amount of wishful thinking was going to get rid of those wrinkles…  Off I went to iron.  It looks like I was trying to decide on the stemware in this photo; the clear etched glasses won out.

I started with the place settings and, more specifically, the chargers.  These twig chargers are large – at almost 15 inches in diameter, their size is more like that of placemats – and the amount of space they took up on the table would determine my centerpiece.  Turns out there wasn’t a lot of space left in the middle as you can see in these length shots.

Here is the place setting.  I thought about adding a smaller charger to better proportion the dinner and salad plates on the twig charger/placemat, but when I tried it, all it did was cover up all the pretty green leaves on the twig charger/placemat.

A closer look at the salad plate…

And the dinner plate.  There are some little flower petals on the plates that are a light purple to pull in the color of the tablecloth and napkins, although it is kind of hard to see as a lot of indigo hue is coming through.

The flatware is from a company called International and the pattern is Empress.

You can see all the flowers on the handles in this close-up; they seemed fitting for spring.

For the centerpiece, I actually started with a eucalyptus garland with fairy lights from my stash but it came from Amazon.  Okay, a small departure from my “pure” dollar store centerpiece, but I needed a bit more height and bulk.  On top of that, I placed a spring green garland, either from Dollarama or the Dollar Tree several years ago.  Then I added the two purple amaranthus picks at either end, followed by the  lavender picks.  I couldn’t fit the candles into the middle of the centerpiece, so I just tucked them as close as I could on a center diagonal and added some mercury votive holders along the length.

I love this light spring green color in the centerpiece – it reminds me of plants coming up from the ground.  I am so itching to get out in the garden!

When I went to pay for the flowers at the Dollar Tree, the lady cashier asked me not to put them down on the counter, saying that “they make a real mess”.  She was absolutely right – there were lavender petals all over the place after I finished the centerpiece and I practically had to vacuum the table.  I see a stray lavender petal here by the candle…  There are many more “strays” under the centerpiece I’m sure.

A sliver of sunlight as the sun went down.  The days are getting longer and we have gained almost 3 hours of daylight here since winter solstice.  Yay!

With candles lit and fairy lights…

I’m feeling cautiously optimistic in this upcoming spring season; our Omicron cases have peaked and are now on a downward slope.  I’m fervently hoping that we are seeing the backside of Covid and not just the backside of the fifth wave!  I guess time will tell.  In the meantime, hurry up spring and happy March everybody!

Resources:

Twig charger/placemats and napkin rings:  Old Pier 1 maybe four or five years ago.

Plates and linens:  HomeSense recently.

Flatware: HomeSense maybe three or four years ago.

Stemware: Large wine glasses are Mikasa (I don’t know the pattern) a gift many years ago.  Smaller crystal wine glasses are Waterford and decades old.

Glass tulip candle holders:  I’ve had for years and can’t remember where they came from.

  1. Very pretty. I love the natural, earthy vibe that goes with the table. Violet / Lavender / Purple are some of my favorites and they always look so sort with green and so pretty and Springy with white. Lovely tablescape.

I was wondering where you found those gorgeous napkin rings. Do you remember? They are perfect with the other elements of the table. I hope by now the snow has melted and you’re seeing Spring flowers popping up.

    1. Thanks so much for your lovely comments and visit JJ. Funny enough, that snow has melted but we have a new batch now lol – its like the winter that won’t end! The lavender napkin rings came from Pier 1 – the brick and mortar store, not online. I’ve had some luck finding old Pier 1 dishware on eBay and similar; napkin rings not so much, but you never know. Good luck if you are trying to find them! Thanks for stopping by and Happy Spring to you!!

    1. Oh my goodness – thank you so much Rachelle! What a sweet gesture and I’m honored to be featured at your lovely party. Hugs back at you!

    1. Thanks so much Rachelle! I could only imagine the fragrance if the lavender was real – heaven! Thanks for the invite, and I’ve shared on your link. Happy Friday and happy upcoming official spring!

    1. Thank you so much Angie! I’m so glad you liked the table – I am so ready for spring even as Old Man Winter continues to dump snow outside lol. Take care and thanks so much for your visit!

  2. Oh this is so pretty Kim, you have definitely captured Spring! I love love your twig chargers, the pretty plates and the lavender tablecloth…the soft purple and greens are just gorgeous together! Oh goodness, all that snow, I can’t imagine…at least you have created Spring temps in your dining room. The centerpiece is perfect {sorry about the messy flowers} and I love the napkin rings too. Stay cozy 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Jenna – its starting to feel like the winter that never ends lol! Our temps have been all over the place this winter and more snow is on the way. Ugh. I keep reminding myself that it is still February! In Calgary. I hope your temps are much better and that spring is on the way for you! Take care down there!

    1. Yes, spring is coming – just earlier for some than others lol! How funny about all the different names for shades of purple – I’ll have to add violet to the list – I couldn’t decide which one(s) best described the table. Hope you are doing well there and looking forward to your St. Patrick’s day table. Take care lovely lady!

  3. Kim, I love your spring tablescape. The twig chargers are perfect with the lavender cloth, love the mix of texture and pastels. The plates are so pretty and the centerpiece is stunning. I am thinking of planting amaranthus in my garden this year. The candles and fairy lights give it a nice romantic feel. We are supposed to have sunshine and temps in the 70’s this week, I can’t wait. Wishing you a lovely week!

    1. Thanks so much Pam! We are supposed to get more snow tomorrow and I’m sort of happy for that because we really need the precipitation but I am so looking forward to spring too. Knowing your green thumb, I’m sure that your amaranthus will do well. Enjoy your lovely temps and warm sunshine and wishing you a lovely week as well!
