Home and garden, tablescaping, organization, DIY

Good morning!

Today I am sharing my Halloween tablescape.  But before I do that, I want to acknowledge the terrible damage caused by hurricane Ian to those in Florida and the southeastern U.S. and by Fiona here in Atlantic Canada.  From the pictures I’ve seen on the news here, the destruction was horrific and my heart goes out to all those who were impacted.  I think it will be a long while before things return to normal but I’m sending prayers for a speedy recovery nonetheless.

And to the table.  At first I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do for Halloween this year.  But then I came across these mercury glass skull heads in HomeSense as they were bringing out their fall and Halloween items and a germ of an idea was born.  I’ve had mercury glass candle holders for years and I knew the skull heads would be a good compliment to them.  Yes, I thought, an elegant table with mercury glass and just a touch of Halloween in black, white, and silver.  No rats or bats, and nothing too scary or creepy, just a few skeleton bones lol.

Mr. Skull looks quite large in the picture above, but he is better proportioned in this picture here.

For the plate stack, I started with my mirrored chargers.  Then I added the most elegant dishes that I own which are white with silver edging.  They are not heirloom China or even expensive or anything but there is just something about white dishes that lends a more formal note to a table.  The dinner plate and salad plate are the same.

A few weeks ago HomeSense had these pretty appy/bread & butter dishes; I think they were intended to be early Christmas items but the pattern would work with a number of tables.  I wanted to have them on the side as true bread and butter plates but there wasn’t enough room on this table, so I added them to the plate stack.  Here is a slightly better view of the pattern around the edge.

I bundled two napkins together for this table.  The napkin underneath is a black and white toile and is encased by an all black napkin intended to make the napkin ring stand out.  Black tulle would have been good here too, but I didn’t have any in my stash. The black and white toile napkin is a botanical print so it’s nothing specifically Halloween which means I can use them for other tables.

These hand skeleton napkin rings were so fun.  They have similar ones at Pottery Barn, but these were considerably less expensive at Walmart.  I was so happy to have found them and they also came in black.

The flatware was from a store called Stokes (now sadly out of business) and I’ve had it for quite a few years.

The stemware is a crystal water glass and some skull hand wine glasses in black.  The wine glasses were from HomeSense last year, but they had them in again this year.  And oh my goodness, they had so many different kinds this year – wine glasses, champagne glasses, martini glasses with skeletons, hands, and skulls – a Halloween enthusiast’s dream, for sure.

As for the centerpiece, my mercury candleholders and candles sit on a black faux fur table topper that was from Amazon.  I was a bit skeptical when the Amazon package initially arrived; it came in a box about the size of legal paper and was only about 1/2 inch thick.  Turns out it was vacuum-wrapped and the fur sprang back to life beautifully once I opened it.

Then I added some black and white hydrangeas and leaves in the middle.

The black leaves are hard to see against the black table topper but here is maybe a better photo…

And last, I added these sweet little ornaments for the only pop of color on the table and to keep the table from taking itself too seriously.

With the candles lit.

Its hard to believe that Halloween is just three weeks away.  Wishing everyone a happy and fun Halloween!

  1. Kim, I love your elegant Halloween Tablescape in black and white. The mercury glass skulls were a great find to accompany your mercury glass candle stands. The mirrored chargers add a stunning presence to the white plate stack. The toile napkins are ideal paired with the black napkins with the skeleton hand napkin rings. The black wine glasses with the skeletal hands adds more spooktacular, but not too much. I love the black fur table topper, the perfect addition to your classic Halloween table!

    1. Thanks so much for your comments Pam and for stopping by. The Halloween tables are a lot of fun to put together and you can let your imagination run wild if you want. I can’t wait to see what you do with your table this year – promises to be fun I’m sure! Take care lovely lady!

  2. Creepy Elegant Kim! I love your centerpiece/runner, the silver skull, the fluffy topper, the black and white hydrangeas…and especially the black cat ornaments! Those skeleton hand goblets, very cool and how neat you found skeleton hand napkin rings to match~ I love the white china, and your new bread and butter plates are so pretty! A beautiful and sophisticated take on Halloween! Yes, prayers and prayers to all who have been affected by the recent horrible hurricanes, and Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

    1. Jenna, thank you very much for your sweet comments. I was trying not to use a lot of Halloween items, but I wanted a few on the table, and I’m glad you like it! I’m pretty sure that you have a Halloween tablescape up your sleeve, and I can’t wait to see what you do with your table. Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes and wishing you a wonderful week!

  3. Oh wow Kim! Your table is lovely – the black with the mercury glass is gorgeously elegant – and the skulls make it just creepy enough for Halloween! Hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving and get to enjoy some time with your family this weekend! Thanks for the elegantly scary inspiration! 🙂

    1. Thanks Barbara. On this table, you could probably replace all the skellie items with non-Halloween stuff and the basic elements would still provide a bit of a dark vibe if a person wanted to. Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes – we had our turkey yesterday as it was the only day that everyone could make it. So today I’m relaxing a bit. In sweatpants of course lol. Hope everything is well with you!

  4. Oh Kim! This is my absolute favourite tablescape yet!! Those napkin rings…adorable! Our Wal Mart here is…to put it bluntly is crap! They would never carry these…sadly! And our original Stokes closed…but then reopened a few years again later. It’s in a small mall…and I never seem to make it there! I love everything about this table…from a “germ of an idea”…luv that!! It’s elegant…and spooktacular at the same time!
Thank you for your sweet words about Fiona..we are still cleaning up…two weeks later…many here still without power. Ours was restored after ten days!! We had planned to see the sights and colours of the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton this week…but there is so much clean up to do here. Next year maybe! Happy Thanksgiving my dear gal! I hope you enjoy turkey & all the trimmings!!

    1. Thanks so much for your comments Charlotte – especially knowing how busy you must be over there. Our Walmart here isn’t all that great either, but they have a really good selection online, which is where the napkin rings came from. There might still be one Stokes here in the northwest part of the city – not sure, but it is almost an hour’s drive to get there so I would have to be really motivated to check it out. Happy Thanksgiving to you too and I hope you get to enjoy turkey and trimmings with your family as well!!
